Souleymane has not walked since his stroke six months ago. He sits at home in a recliner and his family takes care of him. Because of his disability, he no longer goes outside and no longer participates in the meetings of village elders. The cultural value of hiding suffering adds to his isolation. An important focus of our clinic in the North is the care of patients with disabilities or chronic conditions, both in the clinic and in their homes. We provide physical therapy and support the family and community in caring for their sick. This holistic approach is much needed and positively received by the community.

When we visit Souleymane, we help him do the necessary exercises. We explain to the family that although recovery is slow, it is definitely possible. We encourage his wife on how to support him in daily tasks. Souleymane’s self-confidence grows, and with a little support he takes his first steps!
